April

10.11.12

The Judgement Hall Festival returns this April for three days of site-specific performance across sound, movement, and cinema. Presented as a once-yearly gathering, the festival brings together artists whose work is shaped by architecture, duration, and attention

This year’s programme deepens the festival’s curatorial focus through close collaboration with artists working at the forefront of experimental sound, choreography, and film. Each performance is developed in direct response to its setting, resulting in works that exist only within the conditions of this edition.

Across two sites — St Barnabas and Rio Cinema — the festival unfolds as a sequence of distinct encounters. At St Barnabas, artists engage directly with the building’s scale and acoustics, transforming the space anew with each performance. At Rio Cinema, film and sound converge through special presentations and commissioned live scores, experienced through focused, seated listening.

The Judgement Hall History

St Barnabas

Across four events the Neo-Byzantine chamber of St Barnabas was transformed into a portal of earth shattering performances by

Spirit Thinner (Blackhaine, Archie Finch, Bruxism & Bitter Gold), Lord Spikeheart, Sum of R, Aluk Todolo, Guillaume Cazalet & Akihide Monna, Alison Cotton, Five The Hierophant, Jose Macabra Vera Spektor, Natura Morta Ensemble and Hollie Miller & Craig Scott.

We collaborated with each individual artist to produce a scenography that would bring their commissioned performances to life inside the beautiful architecture.

Commissioned Acts

We collaborated with each individual artist to produce a scenography that would bring their commissioned performances to life inside the beautiful architecture.

Sonic Architecture

The Neo-Byzantine inspired architecture created challenges and opportunities in equal measure, inspiring each artists to develop performances specially for the occasion.

St Johns

The Nineteenth Century Church designed by Sir John Soane played host to two special concert evenings involving a diverse range of avant-garde artists including

Neptunian Maximalism, Akash Parekar & Dal Singh Rattan, Myrgon, Ural Umbo, Body of Reverbs, Hector De Gregorio & Magnus Westwell.

Concerts reimagined

Each line-up featured a host of London based & international artists, offering three nights of avant-garde music, performance art, cinematography and exhibitions.

Architectural Alchemy

The curation of the events was led by a vision for artists to interact with the unique features of the church. The theme of the events were to transform the architecture into a living, breathing organism.

The Silver Building

To mark our Four Year Anniversary we curated a 12 hour offering of avant-garde music, cinematography, performance art & exhibitions across four floor of the megalithic The Silver Building.
